A Maximum Principle for Optimally Controlled Systems of Conservation Laws

We study a class of optimization problems of Mayer form, for the strictly hyperbolic nonlinear controlled system of conservation laws ut + [ F (u) ] x = h(t, x, u, z), where z = z(t, x) is the control variable. Introducing a family of “generalized cotangent vectors”, we derive necessary conditions for a solution û to be optimal, stated in the form of a Maximum Principle.
